This is a thread explaining what roleplay is and how to do it; the basics for total newbs of roleplay(that's not meant to be offensive - look up Newb in our Dictionary).
Basically it's like writing any story or book, but you do it with different people - each person being a different character(although some people are skilled enough to roleplay two characters at once). Good roleplayers are polite, literate, and usually with a decent vocabulary. You can see specific roleplay etiquette in a thread here, and the expected rules and guidelines of the site in The Law.
There are characters that are sometimes called 'Mary Sue's, meaning they're really common characters plot, personality, and maybe appearance -wise. Personally I don't believe in Mary Sues anymore because it's nearly impossible to make a truly unique character these days, although some people still manage. Nonetheless, try to make your character unique and not give them traits you picked up from other characters or TV shows or something. The more you come up with yourself, the better.
Absolute roleplayers kind of involuntarily roleplay even outside of serious roleplay, using action verbs and whatnot to tell what they're doing. You already did it yourself, ' :headbang: '. I use -s, and often add periods, and although I used to use grammar within my roleplaying-for-fun, I now let it get lazy. :3
-bounces.- Example. People use *s, :s, ::s, and -s. Some people use other stuff but that's those are the ones mostly seen. Those were also listed in order from n00biest to ch00biest. What's a n00b and ch00b? You can look that up in our Dictionary.
For serious roleplay, IC means In Character and OoC means Out of Character. OoC is just you talking to the other roleplayer for whatever reason, not your character talking. It's usually expressed in (parenthesese) or [brackets].. or something of the like. I use parenthesese for the most part. Most roleplayers like to keep OoC to a minimum in a serious roleplay.
Obviously you can look around the Roleplaying and Character Profiles sections for examples of all this. n.n
That's roleplaying for you. Hope it made sense. <3
