Cliques, social groups, labels, stereotypes, subcultures. You've all heard of them. I'mma compile a neat little list with some definitions to hopefully clear things up.
Feel free to discuss all of it too; what you are, what you might be, what others are, what your opinion of it all is... blah blah. If you feel I've made any mistakes and want me to add to or edit something, feel free to ask too.
For starters...
1. Subcultures are the different directions people, especially teens, go in life. Though not always a way of life that influences everything one does, they certainly play a big role on where and with whom you end up. Some people call subcultures 'labels', often mistaking them for stereotypes, and don't like to use them because it's judging people, but that's not true. Stereotypes are judging people, subcultures are merely classifying them.
It's a good organizational tool, really, especially when describing someone. You can say "She's kind of goth," or "She's goth but not into the drugs or hate or anything" to clear up the stereotype, or if she fits the stereotype a little more you can just bluntly say "She's goth", and it all gives someone a better idea of who that person is.
2. Stereotypes are the sort of judgmental generalizations people make about subcultures. Goths always worship the devil, ravers always do drugs, emos always cut, nerds are always clumsy, stuff like that that is definitely not always true.
Subculture Encyclopedia
Anthro : Short for anthropomorphic, people who are fans of anything anthro, often art-focused. Anthro is not a human with, say, cat ears and tail, but more like a cat with more human-like limbs and of course the ability to speak, unless 'feral'. Anthros differ from furries in the sense that they're more serious about their art and overall fandom, and don't as often or to such extremes take it into their lifestyle or personify themselves as of another species. They love incorporating symbolism into their art.
Bohemian, AKA Artsy person : Those incredibly creative people who are fantastic in either one art field or any art field they try and always seem to be doing something art-related, whether it be working on a painting, sketching somebody at random, or just always carrying art tools. Often environmentalists, but not always. Their attire is typically well-matched whether it be modern, vintage, or a little bit of both. Although a stereotype is that they're the poor, starving artist, this is not always the case.
Bookworm : That person who always has a large book, or sometimes numerous books, with them and can be found reading every chance they get. Very quiet, they might not have a lot of friends, and if they do the relationship is probably not close. Completely absorbed in the world of literature they sometimes lack social skills, but they're usually friendly when spoken to. Often wise, they have the potential to be academically intelligent if they're not already. Their attire is usually nothing special unless the individual is partial to another subculture.
Comedian : Typically there's only 1-3 Comedians in a school, as they're incredibly unique people who are rare to come across. Outgoing, friendly, wise, intelligent, reliable, and most of all unbelievably hilarious in every encounter, although there are few of them everyone in an entire school likely has at least heard of them. It's also likely they even have a fan following, as these are absolutely amazing people that everyone, students and teachers alike, likes. Quick-thinking and prepared, if they don't have a plan they can make one in very little time. Get their autograph while you can, because there's a good chance they'll be famous one way or another by the time they're 25.
Cosplayer : Cosplayers are people obsessed with costuming for just about any reason, sometimes even daily. For the most part their costumes are of favorite characters, but sometimes they're more original or general, like in the case of Lolita and Visual Kei. Though not always professional, their costume-making skills are usually apparent. Often stemming from otakus, many cosplayers got their roots in anime, and their best chance at showing off their costumes are at anime conventions.
Cyber : Cybers come from Raver culture, what could be called a mix of Graver, Industrial, and Steampunk. Though they usually have a certain preference for black, they're definitely not adverse to neon and glowing colors. Like most ravers, their hair is usually wild and eye-catching. Into futuristic technology, their attire is often unique and space age-like, any jewelry or ornaments involving neon tubing or various metal trinkets; goggles are a big part of accessorizing as well. Their main music choice is electronica.
Emo : Short for emotional, Emos are the more sensitive variant of Goths, their moods ranging through different levels of gloominess, whether it be sorrow, angst, or anger. Often self-loathing they lack self-esteem and are prone to self-harm, though not all of them go that far. They're very affectionate, kind, and generous though, and can always be put in a better mood by understanding friends who really care about them. They like analyzing symbolism in everything. Their hair is usually short and dark and almost always consists of a large bang that conceals one or both eyes, their attire is tight, usually dark but sometimes with some rainbows or neon colors. Their main music choice is in fact emo.
Furry : Similar to Anthro in the fandom of anthropomorphics. Furries differ from Anthros in being much more extreme, however. They personify themselves as a species or in some cases many species. They're incredibly affectionate but also very sensitive. They tend to also be either Punk, Raver, Goth, Loner, or Emo, but are sometimes simply Furry. They sometimes take part in fursuiting, a form of Furry cosplaying in which a mascot-like suit is made of their anthropomorphic form. Many different fetishes abound in this subculture, as a stereotype of them is their promiscuity - which can in fact be easily found in the Furry world. Different sexual orientations are common as well. They might have a few issues, but Furries make very fun friends. They sometimes mellow out to Anthro as they mature.
Geek : Very similar to Nerds, except that Geeks' intelligence usually specializes in computers and technology. Though glasses, short hair, freckles, and/or out-of-style fashion is a stereotype, their clumsiness and lack of social skills can often be found true. They're nice people though and are very handy friends when you need help in math, some gadget, or the computer.
Ghetto : AKA Gangsters, Ghettos are the juvenile delinquents of schools' worst nightmares. Usually from either big cities or inner city, they've typically gone through rough times at home and incorporate a considerable amount of slang into their vocabulary. Extremely defensive, although they make loyal friends they're quick to judge, distrust, and sometimes pick on others, so for the most part their only friends are other Ghettos. They tend to be loud and rude, claiming they don't care what others think of them. Though often called Gangster they're not always in a gang, nor are they always into drugs as their stereotype says. Their two main music choices are rap and hip hop.
Goth : Heavily prejudiced, Goths are perhaps the most stereotyped subculture. They don't always do drugs, they don't always worship the devil, and they don't always hate everybody. Goths in personality are unique, usually much wiser than others their age, but for this they're singled out as different and so become bitter and spiteful. Deep down most of them are affectionate, generous, and incredibly loyal to and protective of the people they care about. Because of how they've been picked on, however, they tend to have a lot of pent up anger and/or self-loathing, and so are prone to violence either towards others or themselves. Their attire is mostly black and involves silver chains, spikes, and studs; their hair is almost always black, either long and straight, short and spiked, or a mix in an Emo style. Their main music choice is some form of metal.
Graver : A strange mix of Goth and Raver, Gravers are Goths with a taste for electronica and glowsticks. Though not always active in the dancing or socializing department, they'll still go to raves for the music. They mostly have a Goth personality, but can sometimes be more friendly due to spending time with Ravers.
Grunge : People who love grunge music enough to imitate its style. Though their personalities vary, they're usually along the lines of Punk, being open, friendly, and risk-taking. While some are confident, arrogant even, others are more self-loathing. Their attire often involves plaid, jeans, boots or Converse and an overall ragged look, including not so great hygiene that shows the most in their long hair.
Hacker : Basically hardcore Geeks, Hackers are near geniuses at computers and technology. They can do just about anything on a computer, and whatever they can't do they can learn to do within minutes. And unlike Geeks, Hackers more often have social skills and tend to be talented at manipulating others and getting what they want. Like geeks, however, they're usually friendly, nice people, aside from some sarcasm.
Hippie : Not many teen hippies can be found anymore, unless they were completely raised that way. Hippies are the mellow, peace-loving, environmentally-friendly folk who just want everybody to get along. Although Hippies are very easy to get along with, there are many more negative aspects to them. Their mellow temperament is sometimes due to drugs, their love of nature is sometimes reflected in their hygiene, and although they love peace they don't always think of smart ways to obtain it. They're very artsy and love to create and decorate, their art the meaning of the word psychedelic. Their attire is environmentally-friendly, either brightly colored or in numerous natural tones, and usually baggy. Their music is is all psychedelic rock, trance, or pop.
Industrial : Stemming from Punk, Industrials have very similar attire and hair but tend to have a preference for camo and everything military. Their temperament, like punk, is brave, confident, and rebellious, and spiteful towards either others or themselves. They love Germanic languages, especially German, and this can often be heard their metal and industiral music.
JesusFreak : But for hypocrisy, JesusFreaks often stay true to their stereotypes.. but why anyone ever sees them as a bad thing is difficult to understand. Devoted Christians, JesusFreaks are extremely kind, considerate, generous, reliable, honest, optimistic, and understanding. They'll always listen to what you have to say. You can trust they'll have a Bible on hand, if they don't have the thing memorized. They often give wise advice in any situation, and though some are judgmental most will talk to absolutely anybody without prejudice. Sometimes their drive to convert others can be found annoying, but the smart ones will be less forceful in pulling you into their beliefs and have the insight that you'll find your way there yourself.
Jock : The 'popular', athletic, attractive people that all conformists seem to worship. Though sometimes arrogant or narcissistic, some jocks are nice to everyone. Open, fun-loving, competitive, active in school, and friendly, these are the kids most parents dream of and schools adore. Though like Preps, their social life can sometimes get them into crazy parties, which in turn can lead them to sex, drugs, and/or drinking. Their attire includes brand names that are 'in', like Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, etc., and their hair is also whatever's in/normal; some sort of short for the boys, long and irrationally perfect for the girls.
Kandi Kid : The most well-known type of Raver, Kandi Kids LOVE bright colors and all things childish. They never seem to run out of enthusiasm or affection and can always be relied upon to cheer you up. At the same time their child-like demeanor can sometimes be found annoying, for the most part their very agreeable and friendly people who are easy to get along with. What most people don't imagine is how dangerous they can be; some Kandi Kids are more intelligent than they let on, and with their dancing skills comes amazing coordination and physical endurance. Contrary to popular belief, not all Kandi Kids take drugs to keep them going. Their attire is colorful and a mix of baggy and tight, accessories involving kandi - colorful bead bracelets and necklaces - children's toys, glowsticks, colorful stickers, glitter, and children's backpacks to hold everything. Their hair is crazy, unnaturally colored, and eye-catching like the rest of them. Their main music choice is, predictably, happy hardcore.
Lolita : Lolita is a term coined in Japan, as that's where the subculture started. Often influenced by anime, Lolitas dress fifteenth to eighteenth century, usually with modern touches; frilly dresses, corsets, lace, umbrellas, canes, and top hats. And don't think it's just for the girls; boys are capable of dressing eighteenth century too, though of course male Lolitas are very rare. Sometimes their personality follows their attire; precise manners and etiquette, articulated language, and often a certain degree of narcissism. Most of the time, however, their temperament remains unrelated to their fashion choices. Their main music choice, if not classical and symphonic, is J-Pop, J-Rock, etc, continuing Japanese influence.
Loner : These are the people who, for one reason or another, seriously have no real friends. Usually it's due to a lack of social skills because of some big personality flaw, immaturity, a mental disorder that sets them apart, or something they did at some point that caused everybody to shun them forevermore. When you don't know what's wrong with them it's easy to pity them, but often times when you take such pity into action and try to get to know them, unfortunately you'll find they have no friends for good reason. Their attire is usually nothing special, nor is their hair; hygiene may be poor.
Nerd : These are the students who are going to become millionaires when they grow up because if they don't invent something genius they're going to find something and make it genius. Although perhaps lacking in social skills and ideal physique now, Nerds are extremely intelligent and exceed everyone but each other academically. Not always in glasses and out-of-style fashion like stereotypes would suggest; in fact, sometimes they even follow what's 'in' to a degree. Though sarcastic, they're nice and make very good, loyal friends.
Otaku : Hardcore anime fans, sometimes into cosplay, Visual Kei, and/or Lolita along with it. These people love everything Japanese; in fact, they'll likely inform you that 'otaku' means 'nerd' in Japanese. But in America Otaku is more of a term for an anime fan. If they can't draw anime, they'll try; if they don't have anime, they'll watch it on YouTube; if they don't have manga, they'll order it online; if they don't know Japanese, they'll pick up words as they go. They're usually pretty computer-savvy, as the internet is a good way of obtaining and indulging in anime and manga, and is usually their only link to the country they so love.
Otherkin : Sometimes mistaken for Furry or Anthro as they sometimes are into it, Otherkin are people who one way or another believe themselves to be something other than human, to varying degrees. Though they seem to be very rare, really there are more of them than anyone comprehends, a majority of them keeping their belief secret. The only way Otherkin usually connect is online, unless they're open about what they are and other Otherkin find them. Though most Otherkin are against Furry and Anthro, some get into it, and some even come from it(which usually means they're fakes).
Poser : A Poser is anyone who throws themselves into a subculture and imitates almost the exact stereotype of it, and takes exaggerated pride in being it. Most of them are visibly Posers, but those who look hardcore are easily found out after talking to them. Almost everyone in middle school is a Poser, because middle schoolers jump from subculture to subculture just about overnight, trying to figure out what they are. But through middle school and high school and even all of life, everyone hates Posers.
Prep : These are very similar to Jocks, but less athletic and more narcissistic. Preps are the 'popular' and attractive people who conformists also look to. Most Preps are insincere, dramatic, attentionwhoring, gossipy, and snotty. Just about everyone but Jocks despises them. They look just like Jocks, except boys tend to be less buff and girls tend to be almost anorexic thin. Though Jocks sometimes get into the parties, Preps are usually the ones to start them.
Punk : The term 'punk' encompasses many subcultures as a vague term, but its own specific subculture is unique and original, containing the qualities that branched off into each of the others. Like in Goths, Punks can be angry and violent; like in Emos, Punks can be self-loathing and like symbolism; like in Industrial, Punks like Germanic languages and sometimes the military look, especially mohawks; like in Ravers, Punks are obsessed with music and like neon colors; like in Skaters, Punks sometimes like to skateboard and are risk-takers; like in Grunge, Punks love the 90s and don't always have great hygiene... And like all of them, Punks like alternative forms of music, and most prevalently, Punks are rebellious; the very embodiment of teenage delinquency. Punks are the origin of all those subcultures, but because of how the Punk subculture has been divided, real Punks are much rarer than they used to be.
Raver : Raver is the basic form of the subcultures that like electronica; Cyber, Kandi Kid, Graver, and lesser known ones not included in this Encyclopedia. Ravers like glowsticks, blacklights, and to varying degrees neon colors. They're generally friendly, honest, and open, and try to get along with everyone. Their motto is the acronym PLUR, which for the most part stands for Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. Sometimes an extra R is added for Responsibility due to bad publicity in rave culture's drug use. Their attire varies depending on each individual; some prefer baggy clothes of any style for comfort while dancing, some like neon colors more than others while some prefer black more than others, some like tight or very little clothing for showing off figure and for air while dancing. Hair also varies, but is often crazy and/or unusually colored.
Scene : Though the Scene subculture is somewhat disputed, as far as most have come to know it consists basically of Preps pretending to be whatever subculture is the most 'in', whether that be Emo, Skater, Raver, or Grunge. So although they're technically Posers in whatever subculture they adopt, at heart they're Preps.
Skater : Skaters are a mix of Punk and Stoner, plus skateboarding. Their personalities are mostly Punk-like; rebellious and risk-taking, but also focused. Sometimes their intelligence is affected by drugs if they make that choice, and if it's not they often pick up the slang and mannerisms of Stoners by hanging around with them anyway. Their attire is almost completely influenced by their skateboarding; whatever is comfortable or efficient, whatever works. Their hair is usually just a little shorter than shoulder-length, but is sometimes more Punk in mohawks or spikes. Their main music choice is classic or alternative rock.
Skinhead : Skinheads are much like Industrials, the difference being that they almost always have shaved heads as their namesake indicates and that they're very often Neo-Nazis. Though rare in America, they're understandably more common in Europe. Another differentiating factor is that, though different types of boots can be found, a very identifying trait of Skinheads are Dr. Martens boots.
Stoner : Stoners are, as their name suggest, very into drugs. Because of their drug use they're usually dumb and somewhat slow, though on occasion some degree of wise. They love any sort of trippy or psychedelic optical effect. They tend to be rebellious towards authority, often for the sake of it, or in an attempt to be funny. Easy-going; though other Stoners may find them humorous most intelligent people find their humor just stupid, though sometimes their randomness can be hilarious. They don't often acknowledge what others think of them. Their attire is baggy, their hair like Skaters' or sometimes Punks'.
Straight Edge : Straight Edge kids can be in any other subculture; what identifies them as Straight Edge is that they're.. well, Straight Edge - abstaining from drugs and/or sex. The more prideful Straight Edge people will draw Xs on their hands, as X is the symbol for Straight Edge. Most people don't like the Straight Edge kids who are boastful about what it; often because those who are boastful about it are Posers.
Theater Kid : Theater Kids are the people who get along with almost every subculture and are sometimes in another subculture; those who are very active in theater, auditioning for or at least helping out in every play the school has. They love acting and are obsessed with musicals and movies and the actors and actresses in them; if there's anything you ever need to know about any of that, they're the people to ask. They're friendly, easy-going, and very funny, always happy to cheer people up. Though they make plenty of friends, their closest friends are of course each other. Their main music choices vary, though they all love musical and movie soundtracks.
Visual Kei : Another subculture often stemming from anime fans, Visual Kei people are those who devotedly follow Japanese bands of the style and often imitate it in every way they can. Their personalities, like those of the Lolitas, usually vary, but sometimes they can be narcissistic as a rock star - especially a Visual Kei one - would call for. Their attire is extremely intricate and often asymmetrical, sometimes seeming so random that it's amazing it all goes together. Their hair varies a lot but is always eye catching in its perfection. Their main music choice is of course J-Pop or J-Rock Visual Kei bands.
Feel free to discuss all of it too; what you are, what you might be, what others are, what your opinion of it all is... blah blah. If you feel I've made any mistakes and want me to add to or edit something, feel free to ask too.
