I've noticed that there is an increase in people simply taking things at face value; believing them because someone (especially if that person says that they are an "expert") says that something is so.
Not only this, but I see increasing amounts of people simply repeting what they heard from other people; parents or politicians, and even television programs. They take sound bites and quote them back as fact, even if they're just sensationalist garbage.
And not only that, but the scariest part is that people will take a news program and a television drama, line them up together, and somehow take both as valid. They assume that the news is true simply because it's on TV and people SAY that it's accurately talking about real life events. Or, people do things because they see them on a show that is "based on real events" even though what actually happened is very different in reality.
What's going on with the lack of critical thinking and the lack of people sitting up and saying, "Hey, that sounds convincing, but I'm going to have to ask you to back it up or name your sources"?
Whatever happened to people knowing that it's impossible to trust anyone (especially those with wealth and power), especially when they have everything to lose if they tell you the truth?
And why simply believe a teacher, a parent, or someone else just because they say something is true? With the massive amount of misinformation in schools, it's amazing that kids don't believe in dragons and unicorns and write papers on the practical application of a dragon encounter or hitting a unicorn with a car on accident.
So, why do you believe what you believe? Do you just absorb, regurgitate and repeat, or do you dig a little to see what might be really going on? How trusting are you to give all the power of your understanding to someone else?
This post is probably in the wrong place, but, i dun care, i's not like anyone frequents enough to complain about it...
