~Random interjection.~ I love Teh Nemsis... <33333
^_^ Anyway, yes, I try to be an optimist too... Key word: Try. It's something that takes work; It's not entirely real and true, the way Ree's honest approach is. Optimism is rarely entirely real... but, that's okay, because there are times when it is neccessary.
You can't be happy all the time. Ree's right, it's brief... but you can always look around you and see at least someone who's happy for their brief time, and you can try to be happy for them. Sure, it's an act... An act is how a smile usually has to start... but it can grow into being real happiness. After a while, the act becomes sincere if you really want it to.
You say " I know a lot of people who are just happy they're alive.", and I'm sure that you think you do, hun. But you don't know if what they really feel inside is what they portray outwardly. It's possible to fake a smile. (I can do it with the best, I believe. ^_~) Ree's right, though. In the end, it's easier to be upset because that's the true emotion, usually... To choose to act out an emotion is difficult, and people shouldn't have to fake their happiness if they don't want to. Therefore, you shouldn't really expect everyone to be as happy as those who you claim are 'just happy being alive'.
Everyone is entilted to their own views and feelings. Being pessimistic is just another view, and being upset is just another feeling. And, it is an unfortunate fact that those feelings are much more real and natural than our -chosen- optimism.
